I’ve had a hard day at work, my kids are being difficult and there’s nothing good on the TV. I’m feeling a little bored and a bit fed up. I open my mail or go to the computer and I come across one of your marketing messages.
Now, ask yourself the following question:
Think about the amount of money people will spend on music, hobbies, the cinema, going out, drink, drugs, fairground rides, bungee jumps…
Why do they do it?
Because they want to be entertained. And they want to feel something different to the way they feel right now.
Play that funky music, white boy!
(Or any other combination of race and gender thereof!)
Love JJ.

I really like your advice; you natural marketing style is something that I need a good shot of on a regular basis.
I find that appreciating my clients’ skills is an important part of the equation for me (and for them – although that’s not why I do it). I’ve come to understand that, although they are employing me for my consumer behaviour expertise, that doesn’t mean I’m the expert on everything. We get the best results when I appreciate whatever skill sets they have and make the best use of them.

Hi JJ,
indeed, what a spot on target reminder of how most of our customers are feeling when they encounter our communication and how we need to elicit an emotional trigger – especially a waking up, engaging, and entertaining one like with the tone of your posts here.

Hey, JJ, Play that Funky Music is a song I still listen to occasionally. I downloaded it way back in the days of the wild, wild, west, when Napster was free and the legality of rampant, unfettered, free digital downloading was still in dispute.
Anyway, great reminder of what we need to keep in mind when we write for those that visit our sites.

JJ,
I agree fully. Our clients and customers do need that state of change. That is what we need to provide to maintain and serve.

…play that funky music ’till you die
hey, even cowboys get funky with Wild Cherry.
well said JJ. I treat my customer like gold and spoil them rotten. Even though i have the skills to do the job, it’s all those other things that makes my customers choose me over the competition.
And just when it hit me somebody turned around and shouted…..

Great list of questions to ask yourself. And thanks for the song tidbits – I took a little stroll down memory lane while reading your posts!

The truth is that people would rather be entertained than educated. If we can entertain them with our marketing and sales messages, all the while educating them in the process, we will be successful.
